Betting Preview & Analysis – Who are the favourites to win TI9?

Six Dota 2 teams currently stand out as the favourites to win The International 2019. Namely, these are Team Secret, Vici Gaming, Team Liquid, Virtus.Pro, Evil Geniuses, and PSG.LGD. Of these six teams, only three have won a Major this season. Both Vici Gaming and Team Secret have two each, with Virtus.Pro winning one.

Meanwhile, all three of Evil Geniuses, PSG.LGD, and Team Liquid, have looked legitimate contenders throughout the season. In particular, Evil Geniuses, even though they’ve yet to win a Major nor any significant tournament this season or throughout the lifetime of their current lineup, are not to be discounted because of the consistency of their performance and the sheer talent of their lineup.

Both Team Liquid and PSG.LGD are not to be underestimated either.

The latter may not have had a great follow-up to their second-place finish at The International 2018, but with TI9 being held in Shanghai, China, it’s no secret that management likely is putting tons of pressure on PSG.LGD to defend their home and take home the crown this time around.

As for the former, they replaced longtime member Lasse Aukusti “MATUMBAMAN” Urpalainen with Aliwi “w33” Omar, adding a layer of complexity and a certain dangerous uncertainty to their lineup that gives them a legitimate shot at becoming the first organization to win two TIs heading into TI9 despite not having such a stellar performance for most of the 2018-19 Dota Pro Circuit.

Why Are Team Secret the Team to Beat at The International 2019?

Calling Team Secret the best Dota 2 team outside of TI has been a backhanded compliment for Clement “Puppey” Ivanov ever since the team imploded and finishing in eighth place amidst heavy expectations at The International 2015.

Since then, Puppey has struggled to field a lineup that could stay consistent all-year-long — until now.

The return of Ludwig “zai” Wåhlberg and the addition of the young superstar Michal “Nisha” Jankowski has helped propel Team Secret back into the history boards, earning them a place as one of the winningest Dota 2 teams of all time, with a staggering 74.32% LAN winrate in 148 LAN games, as well as two Majors and a couple of other prestigious LAN titles to show for it.

While it’s often been said that it’s the favourites who usually bow out early of The International because they’re the ones who are too “rigid” to change according to the meta and are often the ones heavily studied by other teams, Team Secret begs to differ.

With a knack for experimentation and a lineup well-capable of bringing to life all the weird concoctions that Puppey can come up with, Team Secret can play to the meta just as well as they can play against and out of it.

Put simply, whereas other teams are trying to think of the box, Team Secret don’t even know what the box is.

That’s what makes Team Secret the team to beat come The International 2019.

Region of TI9 Winner Betting Odds

Some bookies have markets for which of the 6 regions of the world will give the winning team.

Bookmaker
sign up offer up to €100
Europe 1.90
China 3.50
North America 6.00
CIS 6.00
Southeast Asia 22.00
South America 100.00

In case you’re wondering what regions each team is coming from, here’s the list:

  • Europe: Team Secret, Team Liquid, OG, NIP, Chaos, Alliance
  • China: Vici Gaming, PSG.LGD, Royal Never Give Up, Keen Gaming
  • North America: Evil Geniuses, Forward Gaming
  • South East Asia: TNC, Fnatic, Mineski
  • CIS: Virtus.Pro, Natus Vincere
  • South America: Infamous

With six top-tier Dota 2 teams playing at The International 2019, Europe is easily the most stacked region of the tournament.

2019

Even though only Team Secret have won a Major from Europe this season, the same could be said for other top teams from other regions. Not to mention, Europe has OG, who are bringing back their TI8-winning lineup to try and defend their title in Shanghai, as well as Team Liquid, who are as big as a dark horse as they are contenders.

Other teams such as Ninjas in Pyjamas, Alliance, as well as Chaos Esports Club, are not to be underestimated as well.

Of course, China with four Dota 2 teams and an incentive to try and please their home crowd is also a safe pick.

Crown Jewel 2019 Betting Odds Las Vegas

With both Vici Gaming and PSG.LGD in full mid-season form, China’s chances of winning TI9 in front of the Chinese crowd are good.

Outside of those two regions, you’d be hard-pressed to find a convincing argument for the other regions. Except, maybe, for the CIS and SEA regions.

CIS has Virtus.Pro, who’ve been one of the most consistent top teams for the better part of the past three years. Even though their record at TI has been less-than-stellar, a change in captainship with Roman “RAMZES666” Kushnarev could be the gentle nudge that the team needs to finally put them over the top.

SEA, on the other hand, has Fnatic, a Southeast Asian all-star lineup that have spent most of the season trying to solidify themselves as contenders, as well as TNC Predator, who has looked mighty scary since bringing over TI-winning coach Lee “Heen” Seung Gon.
